The most common attacks on the street

Before learning how to defend yourself on the street, it is essential to be familiar with the most common attacks.

This information has been collected and compiled by the English Statistics Department, “Statistics at Home Office” (www.gov.uk/), whose aim is to produce and publish accurate and objective statistics in the form of commentary, tables, and data on the following topics:

  • crime
  • immigration
  • alcohol and drugs
  • counter-terrorism
  • fire and rescue
  • etc.

The ten most common attacks:

  1. The person pushes (with one or two hands) at chest level, followed by a strike to the head.
  2. A wide hook to the head (and/or a series of strikes).
  3. A one-handed grab of the front of the clothing, followed by a punch to the head.
  4. A two-handed grab of the front of the clothing, followed by a headbutt to the face.
  5. A two-handed grab of the front of the clothing, followed by a knee strike to the groin.
  6. A blow to the head with a bottle, glass, or ashtray.
  7. A low roundhouse kick to the legs.
  8. A direct strike to the face with a broken bottle/glass.
  9. A knife attack in a slashing motion. The most common knives are folding knives or kitchen knives with blades around 7 to 10 centimetres long.
  10. Any type of choking.
